Pastured Heritage Turkeys. Our heritage turkeys are also raised outdoors with daily access to grass which they utilize to an even greater extent than broilers do. These turkeys will be a heritage breed; possibly Royal Palm, Blue Slate, Narragansett, Black Spanish or Bourbon Red which are all listed by The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) as "critical", "threatened", or "watch". Heritage turkeys are slower growing birds (7- 8 months) compared to the typical Broad Breasted White turkeys (16 - 18 wks) found in the supermarkets. By purchasing one of these heritage breeds, you will be helping to preserve the genetics of these historical birds by continuing the need for breeding stock at our chick supplier. These pastured heritage breed turkeys are far superior in flavor and texture to the typical supermarket turkey. The number of turkeys will be limited so pre-order one of these birds now for a very special holiday treat. They will be processed in November right before Thanksgiving. Pastured Broad Breasted White Turkeys. This is the kind of turkey that you'll find in the grocery stores. These birds were developed to grow fast and develop large chests. Their chests are so large that they can no longer breed naturally such that the breeding stock needs to be artificially inseminated at the hatcheries. Our Broad Breasted White turkeys are also raised outdoors with daily access to grass which they thrive on. Turkeys eat a lot of grass and bugs when they are raised outside so the difference between these turkeys and industrially farmed turkeys is huge.
Ordering. To ensure that we have enough of these special birds, advance order placement is necessary with down payment to hold the bird. We order Heritage Turkey poults in March and Broad Breasted White poults in June, a reservation before this will ensure that we order sufficient numbers to fill our orders. We will also order a few extra, so feel free to contact us after these dates to reserve one of the extra birds if they are still available.
